In a good matchup it was the SSB SSB Tar Heels 11, the Jefferson Park Penguins
9 at Minute Maid Field.
Kenny Lofton enjoyed a fine day at the plate. He doubled with all three
runners coming home in the 3rd inning, stroked a single in the 4th inning and
tripled plating three runs in the 7th inning. Jefferson Park was not lacking
for run support as they scored in 5 separate innings, yet victory eluded them
as they seemed to forget that pitching is also needed to win ballgames.
The win went to John Smoltz(7-2) who allowed 9 runs in 7 and 1/3 innings.
Mariano Rivera gained credit for his 15th save. Lee Gardner(1-3) was given
the loss in relief.
Left fielder Josh Willingham ripped 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI but it wasn't
enough for Jefferson Park.
